Scheelhaase will visit Iowa this month

With a father that played for the Hawkeyes, quarterback Nathan Scheelhaase has been to Iowa City several times over the years. This month, the 6-foot-2, 181-pound Kansas City native will making another visit to Iowa for a junior day with the Hawkeyes.

"I'll be up there on March 30," said Scheelhaase. "They're going to be in spring practice by then, so I'm going to go to position meetings and talk with some of the coaches and everything."

Scheelhaase, whose father is former Iowa defensive back Nate Creer, received a scholarship offer from the Hawkeyes shortly after attending their camp last summer. There, the versatile athlete with 4.53 speed had a chance to showcase his skills as a quarterback.

"Iowa was actually my first offer," Scheelhaase said. "My dad played at Iowa when Coach Ferentz was there as an assistant, so we've always been pretty close to those guys. I came up to their one-day camp and had a pretty good workout. They said they liked my progressions and my skills, and they'd love to have me in the program."

Creer played at Iowa in the mid 80's when Ferentz served as offensive line coach for Hayden Fry. As an East coast kid relocating to the Midwest, he formed a close bond with Fry's coaching staff and has shared some of his experiences with his son.

"When my dad went to Iowa, he came from Brooklyn so he really didn't have much and the coaches were like his family for four years," said Scheelhaase. "He knows those guys will take care of you as a player and always look after you. They'll treat you like a son like they did for him."

Scheelhaase, whose mother is originally from the Sioux City area, is hearing from a lot more than just the Hawkeyes though. Currently, his list of scholarship offers is approaching double digits.

"I think I'm at nine offers right now," Scheelhaase said. "It's Iowa, Arkansas, Nebraska, Missouri, KU, Stanford, Oklahoma, Wake Forest, and San Diego State. That's in the order that they offered."

All the schools are recruiting Scheelhaase at quarterback except for Oklahoma. The Sooners, whose head coach Bob Stoops played at Iowa with Creer in the 80's, have the junior listed as an athlete right now with the possibility of using him at quarterback, receiver, or defensive back.

This winter, Scheelhaase has already made junior day visits to Kansas and Missouri and hopes to take a trip to Stanford in addition to Iowa. After that, he plans to start focusing on camps where he will make several one-day visits this summer with the list including Iowa, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Purdue, and Illinois, among others. Currently, Scheelhaase says he is remaining patient with the recruiting process.

"I have my certain schools that I like, but I'm still very wide open," said Scheelhaase. "I'm not looking to commit anywhere until sometime during football season or maybe after because I still want to get to see some places this summer and get my official visits in and everything."

As a junior, Scheelhaase completed 86 of 137 passes for 1,861 yards and 20 touchdowns with only five interceptions. He also rushed for 917 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground as well.
