What's in a name? Let's find out.

Plain & Simple

14. Sharon Goodman: Double syllables, stretch and you can kinda get a rhyme going... but it kinda sounds like your aunt, doesn't it?

13. Kate Martin: Hurts to have my favorite player on the squad this low, but we had to do it to 'em.

Something I do love about Kate Martin's name is, for me, she's always a first name/last name person. Kate alone -- especially not in print -- is like "Wait, who?" and Martin alone feels like the dude from accounting. You gotta pair it. Our gal can handle this ranking; she rules so hard.

12. Molly Davis: A damn solid name. And probably our first entry where you could go first name only and be just fine.

Lucky

11. Taylor McCabe: A lot of nickname diversity here; makes you wonder what her next few years will look like. Tay Mac, anyone?

10. Addison O'Grady: Flowy double triplet -- with a top notch nickname. Did anyone know she spelled it Addi until the IG?

Acronym Avenue

9. AJ Ediger: Quite dope. Bonus Iowa points for always reminding me of A.J. Edds. She goes no dots with it though; shades of CC Sabathia.

Lightning & Thunder

8. Kennise Johnson: Love a unique first name with a more common last name. One can kinda pop, while the other holds it down; like the married couple where one person is reserved and the other is the life of the party.

7. Ava Jones: This obviously also checks that box, and Ava being an aesthetic palindrome is just icing.

Gets The Job Done

6. Gabbie Marshall: Just conjures an athlete, doesn't it? Fist name alone works, with some last name sturdiness to prop up the whole enterprise. Gabbie is such a cool name.

Docked

5. Hannah Stuelke: Love Hannah's name but hate how much trouble I have spelling it, regularly. Should she be penalized for this? No. But here we are.

4. Kylie Feuerbach: Actually had Kylie in the No. 3 spot... until I also botched the spelling of her name and unfairly penalized her for that perceived offense. Seriously though: what a killer last name; it makes me think of fire... or a Phoenix.

Last Name Legend

3. Sydney Affolter: Sydney stands alone as a great first name. You got the Scream connotations, the great one syllable nickname, and, before you can get settled boom -- Affolter. What a strong ass, cool ass last name. No notes.

Behind The Velvet Rope

2. Jada Gyamfi: But Bobby, how can you have Jada this high if her last name could be argued as hard to spell?

I don't know what to tell you -- the legends transcend. Immaculately crafted first name that pops that same first syllable sound into the last name. Unique, yet familiar. Like coming home for the holidays the first year after your parents downsized into a new place.

(She also rocks No. 23 -- bonus points unavoidable there.)

1. Caitlin Clark: Do you think I wanted this? This list was too whimsy to ever be called pandering, but... is that what we ended up doing? The only alliterative name on the roster, and she rocks No. 22, and she -- /checks notepad with no writing and only doodles -- is the team's leading scorer/best player. It's not Tiger freaking Woods, but it is a perfect name to coat the GOAT discourse in years to come. She's a quarterback playing a different sport.

Last Week

12/21 - No. 4 Iowa 89, Loyola 69: The main 'headline' for me coming out of this one was initially thinking Gabbie had been benched before finding out she was sick. It was less about that mistake and more thinking "Well, I don't know, maybe that is the right call?" upon initially seeing her off the floor. She still has plenty of time to get right, and her March reps last year are desperately needed if this team is going to hit the same heights. We have more time.

On a less bummer of a note, this Kate Martin (first name/last name, baby!) steal 'n' score was damn nice (0:33 second mark).

Also, this Clark dime at the 9:03 mark was the ohhhhhhhhhhhhwow highlight of the game.

This Week

12/30 - Iowa (4) vs. Minnesota: Sweet, sweet Big Ten play.

1/2 - Iowa (4) vs. Michigan State: We once convinced a drunk friend in college that MSU's mascot Sparty was actually named Tim The Spartan.

Perkins Place

The men didn't play this week, but Tony Perkins' line against UMBC was pretty great. He shot 100% from the free throw line, 0% from three (0/3), and 50% from the field overall. His 23 points led all Iowa scorers.

Found out folk singer Noah Kahan had this in the headphones on his way to Saturday Night Live to get himself pumped up for his performance. And honestly, who hasn't been there?

Obligatory Michigan Section

Punting on hoops to talk football this week. Well, the CFP is jusssst about finally here, and I'm of course on pins and needles. In terms of feelings, I think I've settled on the spread. My hope is Michigan can win close. It's easy to see them getting blown out and less easy to see them being the ones lighting up Alabama. The Rose Bowl, as always, should be a beaut though.
