Brands in the only known candidate to have interviewed with Iowa officials and reports are that the meeting took place yesterday at an undisclosed location in Iowa. Process of elimination leads to the conclusion that Brands is Iowa's choice as the new head of the Iowa Wrestling program.
Obviously Brands is no stranger to the Iowa wrestling room having been a three time national champion, three time Big Ten champion, and four time All American as a Hawkeye. In addition, Brands also won an Olympic gold medal in 1996 at 136.5 pounds, outscoring his opponents 19-1 in the process.
Brands is also no stranger to coaching at Iowa, having served as an assistant to both Dan Gable and Jim Zalesky from 1992 until taking the Virginia Tech position in June of 2004. Along with his coaching at Iowa, Brands has served as a coach on the USA Olympic freestyle team.
