4****QB/DB Tom Zbikowski ran for 2 TDs (65, 1 yds) and made a TD saving tackles as #1-7A Arlington Heights Buffalo Grove (11-0) rolled over Northbrook Glenbrook North 35-3. The Bison will host defending 7A Champ Mount Prospect in a quarterfinal tilt (BG won the regular season match-up).
5*****QB Chris Leak broke the national high school record for touchdown passes throwing for 5 TDs in Charlotte, NC Independence's 49-13 rout of Vance to raise his career mark to 171. Leak finished with 457 yds, 2 INTs for the final conference game, extending Independence's win streak to 41, and the Patriots are now looking for their 3rd straight 4A championship.
3***QB Ambrose Wooden rushed for 194 yds, 2 TDs (25, 61 yds), and passed for 210 yds, 2 TDs (30, 40 yds) as the Gilman School Greyhounds (10-0, 4-0) clinched their 5th straight Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference crown over the visiting McDonogh Eagles 35-14. Wooden accounted for 404 of the Greyhounds' 485 yards of offense and leads the state in career total offensive yards with 7,261 -- 4,033 rushing for 46 touchdowns and 3,228 passing for 30 touchdowns.
4****QB James Battle passed for 153 yds, ran for 66 yds, and tallied 4 TDs as Denton Ryan stomped Hebron 51-13, capturing their 4A district championship. 3***WR John "Phillip" Jones caught 4 passes for 111, 1 TD (34 yds).
Junior 3***RB Greg Coleman rushed for 204 yds, 2 TDs, as Iowa City West rallied with 3 TDs in the last 4 minutes to beat Cedar Rapids Washington 28-27 in the 4A first round playoffs.
4****RB Michael Turner carried 24 times for 201 yds, 2 TDs, including the 10-yd winning TD as Fort Worth Dunbar beat Arlington Arlington Heights 21-13 to win their 4A district championship.
3***WR Ryan Mundy caught a 30 yd TD pass, and the following 2 pt PAT catch, as #1-AAAA Pittsburgh Woodland Hills advanced to the WPIAL Semifinals with a 35-0 blanking of Bethel Park.
4****RB Tyrone Moss ran for 245 yds, 5 TDs in a convincing Pompano Beach Ely 54-16 win over Fort Lauderdale Dillard. Dillard’s 2**QB Oliver Bozeman threw for 235 yds, 2 TDs in the loss.
1*RB Dave Mordis ran 27 times for 210 yds, 3 TDs as Palos Heights Amos Alonzo Stagg ran away from Chicago Morgan Park 51-21, moving on to the 7A quarterfinals.
3***RB Austin Sykes rushed 4 yds for the winning score as Coraopolis Moon Area (6-5) upset 3rd seeded New Castle, PA(9-2) 21-16 and moved into the WPIAL AAA Semifinals.
1*RB Dustyn Baethke rushed for 179 yds, 6 TDs (7, 6, 3, 15, 11, 35 yds) as #1-2A Williamsburg smashed #3-2A Sigourney-Keota 48-13 in the first round of the playoffs.
2**RB Yvenson Bernard gained 293 yards of offense and scored 2 TDs, leading the Boca Raton Bobcats to a 32-20 victory over host Palm Beach Lakes.
1*FB Steve Parker caught a 32-yd TD pass, and he caught a 2 pt PAT pass in overtime as Chicago St. Rita upset #1-7A seed Chicago Hubbard 29-28. 2**RB Antoine Doby had scored on a 2-yd rush in overtime for the Greyhounds.
1*RB Jerry Seymour helped his 2A Miami Monsignor Pace Spartans finish with a perfect (10-0) regular season with a 275 yard, 6 TD performance in a 49-25 win over 6A Sarasota Riverview.
2**DB Jameel Brady came up with a 37-yard INT return for a TD as the Miami Killian Cougars (10-0) sailed past defending state 6A runner-up Miami Northwestern, 21-7.
4****RB Brian Dennison ran for 253 yds, 3 TDs as Jacksonville, FL Mandarin ran over Wolfson 45-21.
Last week’s stars:
#6-5A Southlake Carroll moved to 9-0 with a 55-7 triumph over The Colony. 3***WR Scott Chandler hauled in four passes for 68 yards and two TDs for Carroll.
Humble moved to 8-1 with a 56-14 win over rival Humble Kingwood. The Wildcats, forced five turnovers and received two scores from 3***DB/PR Erik Mayes, who scored on a 67-yard punt return and a 26-yard INT return.
Tampa Chamberlain 1*RB/DB Mike Ross ran for 161 yards in a 23-15 win over Tampa Hillsborough.
4****TE/DE Jonathan Stupar led the Little Lions with 5 catches for 70 yds, 1 TD (19 yds) on OFF, and 1 Fumble Recovery on DEF as State College, PA outlasted Williamsport 35-19. 4****RB Darrell Blackman rushed 25 times for 243 yds, 1 TD for the Millionaires in the losing effort. Blackman’s season total is 2,308 yds.
2**RB Jerry Seymour ran for 153 yards on 9 carries and scored 4 TD in a 42-0 win over previously unbeaten Miami Belen Jesuit. The Spartans are 9-0!
4****QB James Battle was 6 of 8 for 176 yds, 4 TDs as #3-4A Denton Ryan moved to 8-1 after a 40-7 victory over Richland. 3***WR John "Phillip" Jones caught 2 passes for 108 yds, 2 TDs and 3***DE Jarvis Moss keyed the Defense in holding Richland to only 164 yards of offense.
3***QB Oliver Bozeman threw for 391 yds, 5 TDs in a Miami Monsignor Pace 49-32 win over Sunrise Piper.
3***RB James Johnson rushed for 201 yards and two TDs for Port Arthur, TX Memorial, but it was not enough as Baytown Lee prevailed 36-29.
4****RB Brian Dennison had 22 carries for 212 yds, 2 TDs (30, 98 yds) as Jacksonville Mandarin ran by Winter Springs 35-11.
4****RB Michael Turner carried 14 times for 250 yds, 5 TDs as Fort Worth Dunbar (6-3, 4-0) continued its district domination, 82-20 over FW Poly.
PS: Sorry to hear that 4****RB Harvey “Scooter” McDougle did not make it in this weekend, due to a car accident. Hope all’s well with the travelers, and we will see you 12/06/02 in Iowa City!
