After a particularly good game in his freshman season, Joe Wieskamp entered the interview area at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Teammate Jordan Bohannon was just finishing up his interview with the Iowa beat writer and he looks over at Wieskamp, smiles, and says over and over again, “He’s a pro!”
Wieskamp could only smile when the comments were made.
Fast forward to the end of his junior year and Wieskamp puts his name into the NBA Draft process for a second time. This time, the Muscatine native is officially in with both feet as he announced on Friday that he would be staying in the NBA Draft, ending his three year Iowa career.
Any doubt that remained about Wieskamp’s status was erased last week in Chicago when he put on a show in front of every NBA executive and scout at the combine.
First, Wieskamp measured in at 6-foot-7 with a 6-foot-11 wingspan, which is impressive. Then went 42 inches in his max vertical, which was the four highest mark of any player. But, it was his performance in the second five on five scrimmage last Saturday that certainly sealed the deal. Wieskamp was 6-7 from behind the NBA three point line, scoring a team high 26 points and hauling down 10 rebounds.
Wieskamp, who was voted second team All Big Ten last season, is now generally considered to be a certain second round pick in the NBA Draft, which takes place July 29th at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY.
For his career, Wieskamp will finish with 1,283 points, which is 24th on Iowa’s all-time scoring list. He averaged 13.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game in his Iowa career.
