2018 OL Trey Winters visits Iowa

With a father who played basketball at Iowa, 6-foot-6, 305-pound Ankeny Centennial offensive lineman Trey Winters has caught the attention from the Hawkeye coaches for his skills in football as they hosted him over the weekend on a game day trip.

“It was great," said Winters. "The atmosphere was great. They have a great thing going on with their program and all that.”

Winters had an opportunity to learn a lot about what the program had to offer overall.

“Before I went and talked to the coaches, we went to a tailgate for a little bit," Winters said. "We saw the facilities, the weight room, and the practice field. We went and watched them play the game. It was good overall.”

The entire visit was what Winters said he considered to be the highlight of the trip.

“I liked it all," he said. "It was good overall.”

Winters was able to garner attention from the Hawkeyes in the off-season.

“I went to their camp at the beginning of the summer in early June I want to say," said Winters. "I did pretty good and got interest from them at first. In early August, I got invited to come to a game and choose the Penn State game.”

The program at Iowa is one that Winters has a lot of respect for.

“It looks pretty good," Winters said. "I don’t overanalyze stuff but they look really good. Their defense was able to get some good stops. Their offense had some pretty good drives.”

Winters expects to hear back from the Hawkeye coaches in the near future.

“Just generally they said to keep have a good season and that they’ll stay in contact and all that.”

Two other in-state colleges are also following Winters and his progress.

“UNI has been keeping in contact with me and Iowa State is showing some interest.”

Winters mentioned the schools that have stood out to him the most in recruiting.

“Just Iowa State and Iowa," he said. "I like both of them because of what they can offer for education.”

The high school football season is one that Winters believes is headed in the right direction.

“I feel the start of the season was a little slow but we are picking up the pace," said Winters. "We will do great during the rest of the season.”
