Ames linebacker Joe Evans is nearing a college decision with an in-state battle brewing for this talented athlete. After his visit to Iowa City this weekend, we caught up with the 6-foot-3, 210-pound Evans to get the very latest.
Q: How was your visit at Iowa go?
EVANS: I had a great time.
Q: What was your schedule during the weekend?
EVANS: At 7:45, we met in the lobby. At 8:15, we had breakfast and talked to academic advisors. After that was a player panel. Then we went to the basketball game. After that, we went on a tour of Kinnick. Then we toured their indoor facilities. Then I got to meet with Coach Ferentz and then had a meeting with Coach Wallace.
Q: How was the meeting with Coach Wallace?
EVANS: It went great. We watched film and went over the reads. We also talked about my opportunity to play at Iowa and how great it would be.
Q: What did they say about you as a college player and how you fit into their system?
EVANS: They offered me a preferred walk-on and they want me to play linebacker.
Q: How do you feel about playing defense in college?
EVANS: I'm really excited about the opportunity.
Q: Do you have a position preference of offense vs. defense?
EVANS: I do not. Wherever the team needs me, I'll play there.
Q: What was your highlight of your visit?
EVANS: Honestly, I just had a fun time being there and taking in everything.
Q: How do you feel about the Iowa program overall?
EVANS: I was really impressed by the program on what they had to offer.
Q: What other schools are in the picture?
EVANS: Right now, I've narrowed it down to Iowa and Iowa State.
Q: Is there a leader between the two?
EVANS: As of right now, no. I'll make my decision in the next two weeks.
Q: What position is Iowa State recruiting you at?
EVANS: Linebacker.
Q: Have you taken your official to Iowa State?
EVANS: I'm taking it on Saturday.
Q: How do you feel about the Iowa State program?
EVANS: I've been on many game day visits and am impressed on what Coach Campbell has done with the program.
Q: Would it be tough to leave Ames for college?
EVANS: It wouldn't be. My brother is going to Iowa right now and my twin sister is going to Iowa next year.
Q: What will be the biggest factors in your decision?
EVANS: Really, to see if I can see myself being there for the next five years and how much of an impact I can make.
Q: Has either school been recruiting you harder?
EVANS: I would say they both are recruiting me the same.
As a senior, Evans led Ames High School on both sides of the ball, finishing the season with 2,438 yards passing, 754 yards rushing, and a total of 36 touchdowns on offense to go along with 69 tackles on defense.
