One year ago, cornerback Camron Harrell earned a scholarship offer at Iowa’s camp. Now, the 5-foot-11, 193-pound Illinois native is getting ready to report for workouts and begin his college career with the Hawkeyes. We caught up with Harrell this week to talk about the transition and much more.
Q: When do you make the move to Iowa City this summer?
HARRELL: I leave June 9th.
Q: What are you looking forward to in starting workouts with the team?
HARRELL: I just want to be around the guys and prove to everyone what I can do and how hard I work.
Q: What are your goals for your freshman year? Are you hoping to play or expecting to redshirt?
HARRELL: I'm hoping to see the field a little bit, but if I get redshirted it's no big deal. I'm just happy I'm there.
Q: Which coach do you talk the most with and what has been their message?
HARRELL: The coach I talk to the most is Coach Parker and he just tells me I have to be ready to work hard when I get there.
Q: Are you starting out at corner or safety?
HARRELL: Cornerback.
Q: What will it mean to you to walk out of the tunnel at Kinnick Stadium for the first time?
HARRELL: I already know it's going to send chills up my spine. You just can't beat the atmosphere of Kinnick.
Q: When you look back at everything, what was it about Iowa that made it the right place for you?
HARRELL: Definitely the way they run everything there. They build themselves off culture and that's what my high school at home does, so it just created a home like feeling for me.
Q: What number will you be wearing in college and can we get a quick height and weight update?
HARRELL: I have no idea about my number yet. My current height is 5'11” and my weight is 193 pounds.
Q: Do you have a preference on your number or not a big deal to you?
HARRELL: Preferably #6, but if not it doesn't matter.
Q: Lastly, how is track season going so far this spring and what are some of your best times?
HARRELL: It’s going well. My best time in the 100 so far this year is a 10.65 and in the 200 it’s a 22.01. My best long jump is a 23'1”.
Q: What’s the goal the rest of the way in track?
HARRELL: Just end my career with more medals.
Q: What are your finishes so far at state?
HARRELL: I have a 5th place long jump from my sophomore year and a 4th place in the 100 from my junior year.
A three-star prospect, Harrell committed to the Hawkeyes last June shortly after receiving a scholarship offer at Iowa's camp.
As a senior, Harrell finished the season with five interceptions on defense to go along with 760 rushing yards and 440 receiving yards on offense.
