While the on the field product for the Hawkeyes was headed in the right direction in 2008, Iowa really felt the effects of a tough 2007 season on the recruiting trail.

Iowa's class was ranked by Rivals.com as the 64th best class in the country and it was riddled with a large number of defections and misses, many very early on in their careers. Of the 20 players signed by Iowa in 2009, six washed out quickly and several others either never became contributors or saw their careers cut short due to injuries.

Now, there were some bright spots, particularly the development of Micah Hyde, who is the only NFL Draft pick of the class.

We take a look back at this class and offer up our re-ranking.

The Iowa native turned down FCS offers and decided to take a grayshirt offer from the home state Hawkeyes later in the recruiting process. As has happened in the past, the grayshirt never happened and the Iowa defensive end found his way on the roster for fall camp. He redshirted in his first year and saw limited action a year later. Then moved to defensive tackle for a season and injured his knee that cut short his sophomore campaign. In his final two years, Alvis moved back to end and started 21 games. Rivals Re-Ranking: ***

The in-state prep originally committed to Iowa State and then in flipped to Iowa late in the process. The Des Moines native redshirted and was back on the depth chart at center for the first couple of years. Then he started to gain some traction on the depth chart at guard. He started the final three games of his junior year at guard and then earned honorable mention All Big Ten honors in his senior year, starting every game. Rivals Re-Ranking: ***

The Florida prep picked the Hawkeyes over a pretty decent offer list. He was slated to play defensive back for the Hawkeyes and redshirted in his first year at Iowa. That was the extent of his Hawkeye career. He left and transferred to Murray State and saw limited action at wide receiver. Rivals Re-Ranking: **

Another in-state lineman that the Hawkeyes over the Cyclones in the summer after earning an Iowa offer following a strong summer camp performance. Clark never really made his way up the depth chart during his time with the Hawkeyes and finished up his time at the University of Iowa throwing shot put for the Iowa track and field team. Rivals Re-Ranking: **

The Mount Pleasant prep followed in his father’s footsteps and signed with the Hawkeyes. He redshirted in his first year with the Hawkeyes and saw limited action as a redshirt freshman. Cotton really made his first mark in an Iowa uniform as a punt returner. While his pass catching numbers never really took off, Cotton was an outstanding return man, including a kickoff return for touchdown in the Outback Bowl against LSU. Rivals Re-Ranking: ***

The son of former NFL offensive lineman Jimbo Covert picked the Hawkeyes. Covert was set to play defensive line and eventually moved to fullback after finding a clogged depth chart on the line. Covert didn’t end up staying at Iowa much beyond the move to fullback. He finished up his career at California University of Pennsylvania. Rivals Re-Ranking: **

He was one of the most hyped recruits in the state of Iowa in 2009. The Cedar Rapids prep standout picked the Hawkeyes over schools like Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Wisconsin. Davis did not redshirt in his first season at Iowa. He ended his Iowa career with 112 receptions for 1,470 yards and started every game in his final two years with the Hawkeyes. Rivals Re-Ranking: ***

Iowa doesn’t dip into Massachusetts very often for a recruit, but they did this year, finding DiBona, who played linebacker. After redshirting, DiBona played in all 13 games in his second year on campus, starting a pair of games. His next year was lost after he tore is Achilles tendon and then after his recovery, he suffered a concussion that ended his career. Rivals Re-Ranking: **

Dakota Getz was small school do it all star in Illinois and came to Iowa with the idea of playing tight end for the Hawkeyes. After redshirting, he saw limited action, primarily on special teams. Then he eventually moved to linebacker before suffering a knee injury against Iowa State. Rivals Re-Ranking: **

The Hawkeyes signed the Ohio prep with the idea that he would line up on the defensive line. He didn’t last long with the Hawkeyes and transferred to Louisville, but never made it there. Rivals Re-Ranking: INC

The Illinois prep linebacker committed to Iowa in November and was slated to come in and play defensive line. He never cracked the depth chart for the Hawkeyes and his career basically ended fairly early on as a player, but he stayed around the program in a non-playing role. Rivals Re-Ranking: INC

Certainly the best story of this class and he developed into the biggest impact player of this group. Hyde was a somewhat lightly recruited player out of Iowa that the Hawkeyes picked up just before signing day. Hyde played as a true freshman and then moved into the starting lineup at cornerback, where he earned 1st team All Big Ten honors in his senior year. He was also an outstanding return man for the Hawkeyes in his career. Hyde was drafted in the 5th round by the Green Bay Packers. Rivals Re-Ranking:****

The Hawkeyes won a pretty good recruiting battle to land MacMillian, who grew up in Canada and played prep football in New Jersey. MacMillian became a big recruit fairly late in the process and picked the Hawkeyes late in the process. Injuries were the story of MacMillian’s Iowa career. He would rise up the depth chart only to have injuries put him to the sidelines. He did play some in a rotation when healthy for the Hawkeyes. He was a first round draft pick in the CFL Draft by Ottawa. Rivals Re-Ranking:***

The Clinton prep lineman was a late get for the Hawkeyes. He lasted a semester with the Iowa Football team and left the program and didn’t seem to resurface with another program. Rivals Re-Ranking: INC

The east coast wide receiver signed with the Hawkeyes and didn’t make grades, so he landed at Milford Academy prep school. Never made it to Iowa and signed with Ohio University and saw limited action there. Rivals Re-Ranking: **

Was actually a grayshirt in the Class of 2008 that ended up being a part of the 2009 class. The Iowa City native started his career at linebacker and then moved to fullback in the middle of his time with the Hawkeyes. He saw limited action as a deep reserve during his Iowa career. Rivals Re-Ranking: **

Brad Rogers was a solid recruit for the Hawkeyes out of Ohio in 2009. He started his career at running back and then moved to fullback, where he made 12 career starts with limited stats accumulated. Rogers ended his career a year early due to injury concerns. Rivals Re-Ranking: ***

Signed with the Hawkeyes and the tight end opted to enroll early at Iowa. Participated in spring ball with Iowa and then left the program. Played at the Junior College level after leaving Iowa. Rivals Re-Ranking: INC

The Decorah prep standout is the son of a former Cyclone and ended up taking the offer extended by the Hawkeyes prior to the start of his senior season. He’s a classic case of the Iowa program developing an in-state offensive lineman. After redshirting, he saw limited action in his freshman and sophomore seasons. Then he moved into the starting lineup at right tackle for his final two seasons, earning 2nd team All Big Ten honors in his senior season. He was also an academic All American at Iowa. Rivals Re-Ranking: ***

You could probably write a book about the recruitment and career of Brandon Wegher. The four star back signed with the Hawkeyes after a pretty intense recruiting battle with some strong college programs. No doubt, he was the most talked about recruit of this class. He made an impact early as a true freshman, rushing for 641 yards and a school record for a freshman, 8 touchdowns. Surfaced briefly at Oklahoma and Iowa Western JUCO before taking a few years off and then resurfacing at Morningside College, where he had a very good finish to his college career.
