The Hyball is a weekly basketball column

You underestimated greatly / Most number ones ever, how long did it really take me?

This Drake lyric, from 2013's "5AM in Toronto," is what immediately popped in my head seeing Caitlin Clark secure the Iowa women's basketball all-time scoring record. In November of her senior year.

Others took notice.

Megan's right -- it can (and did) happen quick ... How long did it really take her? ... And the last thing I'd want is to ho-hum an accomplishment, but there honestly is a little bit of a "thank u, next" feeling.

With Caitlin Clark's career, everything she's done has felt like a big piece to an even bigger puzzle. Like playing Jenga with Stonehenge; every piece and movement, significant. The GOATs have checkpoints. Rookie of the Year begets MVP begets early playoff failure begets the eventual Career Defining Championship.

Caitlin Clark's aura of inevitability makes nearly everything she does, to me, feel like a stepping stone to a WNBA Finals MVP, an Olympic gold medal, or both. That or just, you know, seismically shifting what people ever thought was possible in the women's game and inspiring the next generation going forward.

I'll put a limit on her game the second GIA puts a limit on my word count.

Last Week

This column ran a day late last week, so we already talked about the Virginia Tech game... but man, that whipped ass.

Anyway.

11/12 - No. 3 Iowa 94, Northern Iowa 53: Maybe it's the windows at UNI's arena, but watching that court as the sunlight shines through just feels like trudging over to the fieldhouse after a night of drinking; dreary-eyed, yet purifying. I'll remember this game most for Gabbie Marshall getting on the board. After an oh-fer in the season's first two games, the Pretty Eyed Sniper was the team's second-leading scorer, finishing with 17 points and shooting 50% from three.

Also: Jenga.

This Week

11/16 - Iowa (2) vs. Kansas State: Revenge is a dish best served Clark.

11/19 - Iowa (2) vs. Drake: Part two in Taking Over The State.

Perkins Place

Despite the L, appreciated the fight we showed in the Creighton game. Does Ben Krikke have an actual chance to lead the team in scoring this season, or was that result a Not Playing Big Ten Opponents-type thing?

I'm either somewhat late or right on time to the Zach Bryan party -- depending on your level of country fandom -- and could not be more impressed with this dude. My friend Matt (also a recent convert) put it best: "I don't think I have ever had a higher bar for a musician, and this guy keeps clearing it."

It's country without the bro-ness; modest production; earnest lyrics; Americana. My favorite album of any kind in at least three years.
