The 2018 state basketball tournament is tipping off soon and a number of athletes with Hawkeye ties will be competing for a championship this week in Des Moines.

Game: #1 Iowa City West vs. #8 Muscatine

Class: 4A

Day/Time: Tuesday at 6:30 PM

Athletes to Watch: Patrick McCaffery, Iowa City West, Joe Wieskamp, Muscatine

More: With what may be one of the most interesting matchup of the first round, the state's top rated player in 2018 (Wieskamp) and 2019 (McCaffery) face off. These future Hawkeyes have combined to average over 52-points per game and will be on display both offensively and defensively.

Game: #2 North Scott vs. #7 West Des Moines Valley

Class: 4A

Day/Time: Wednesday at 10:30 AM

Athlete to Watch: Ty Anderson, North Scott, Trayvon Williams, WDM Valley

More: Anderson has visited Iowa City previously and has quickly become one of the most reliable scorers for the Lancer. This 6-foot-4 wing projects at the scholarship level in college. Trayvon Williams of Valley has landed an offer from South Dakota State and will be on the eyes of Division I coaches across the Midwest this summer.

Class: 3A

Day/Time: Tuesday at 1:00 PM

Athlete to Watch: Tyler Endres, Norwalk

More: The footwork and athleticism that helped Norwalk offensive lineman Tyler Endres land multiple Division I football offers before committing to the Hawkeyes will be on full display at state basketball for the Warriors. He is averaging nearly 9-points a game but doing it by hitting 71% of his shots from the floor.

Class: 3A

Day/Time: Tuesday at 2:45 PM

Athlete to Watch: Mosai Newsom, Waverly-Shell Rock

More: The Hawkeyes are not the only Division I football offer on the table for defensive end Mosai Newsom but he has proven to be one of the most reliable scorers for the Go Hawks this winter. He is scoring 8.7 points and pulling down 4.9 rebounds per night as a junior.

Class: 3A

Day/Time: Tuesday at 4:30 PM

Athletes to Watch: Xavier Foster, Oskaloosa, Cole Henry, Oskaloosa

More: Another #1 rated player, Xavier Foster, will be a force for the Indians at the state tournament. This 2020 bigman has continued to take his game to another level and it shows as a sophomore. He is averaging 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 blocks per game for a team that has consistently been among the elite in Class 3A. Henry has some major size at 6-foot-9 and will continue to be followed by many Division I coaches.

Athlete to Watch: Logan Klemp, South Hamilton

More: Klemp is signed and headed to Iowa City this summer but hopes to help his team to a tournament run to remember. He has been a four-year varsity player and brings the effort, energy, and strength that this team needs in a big way.

Class: 1ADay/Time: Monday at 1:00 PM

Athlete to Watch: Issa Samake, Grand View Christian

More: Samake transferred in from a school in Tennessee and has had to sit a large portion of the season due to the decision. His potential is off the charts with offers from Iowa State and Tulsa. A strong showing in front of college coaches at state could see that number continue to grow.
