PTL gets underway on Monday night
For the Iowa basketball junkie, the Prime Time League is the perfect tonic to get your summer fix of hoops. The annual summer league, which has been around over 20 years, gives Hawkeye fans a chance to see the improvements made by the returning players, a chance to once again watch some familiar faces, and get their first look at incoming freshmen.

The brainchild of Iowa City attorney and hardcore hoops fan, Randy Larsen, held their annual draft on Wednesday evening. Once again, Hawkeye players were well represented, early and often, in the draft order with junior Tony Freeman being picked first overall. Last year, Freeman was named MVP of the Prime Time League.
The UNI Panthers are also well represented with senior Eric Coleman going second overall, followed by incoming Hawkeye freshman power forward Jarryd Cole being picked third.
The trend of picking big men continued in round one of the eight team league with Hawkeyes players David Palmer and Kurt Looby going 6th and 7th overall.
The PTL begins play on Monday night, June 18th at the North Liberty Community Center starting at 6 p.m. The center has two gyms, so two games will take place at that time followed by two more contests at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free to the public and the gym is air conditioned.
The Game Time League, which will feature the Iowa women's Basketball team, will hold their draft on Thursday evening with play starting on Tuesday night. The league will play Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6 and 7:30 p.m. at the same location.
Here is a look at the rosters and some players to watch this summer:
MCCURRYS/GATENS REAL ESTATE
Tony Freeman, Iowa; Matt Gatens, Iowa City High; Matt Schneiderman, ex-Northern Iowa; Dallas Hodges, Wayne St.; Brennan Swayzer, ex-Kirkwood; Kaylon Williams, C.R. Kennedy; Brian Haak, Northern Iowa; Josh Molstead, Northern Iowa; Jamey Meyer, St. Ambrose; Riley Larson, Cornell; Bryant Kucera, Kirkwood.
Initial Thoughts: Normally, summer leagues are pretty guard oriented, but this one is thin in terms of high level talent that will be around for the entire league schedule. Tony Freeman is the best of the bunch and that is why he goes #1. Iowa fans will certainly want to take a look at Gatens (who is committed) and Williams, who they will be looking at this summer. The problem for this team could be that both Williams and Gatens will also be playing AAU basketball and probably miss significant time.
DELI MART/IOWA CITY READY MIX
Eric Coleman, Northern Iowa; Lucas O'Rear, Northern Iowa; J.R. Angle, Iowa; Jake Kelly, Iowa; Mike Walker, Southern Methodist; Eric Johnson, Wayne St.; Joe Gentile, ex-W.D.M. Valley; Travis Rhone, Wayne St. (football); Jay Williams, ex-Kirkwood; Eric Washpun, Iowa City High.
Initial Thoughts: Coleman is a beast and one of the toughest individual matchup's in the PTL and will keep this team competitive. J.R. Angle has gotten positive reviews from the new coaching staff in Iowa City, so we will see if his game has picked up more steam. This sort of a summer league is made for a player like Jake Kelly. There will be a few times this summer where something he does will have the crowd buzzing.
IMPRNTD SPORTWEAR/GOODFELLOW PRINTING
Jarryd Cole, Iowa; Kevin Sams, ex-Drake; Seth Gorney, Iowa; Duez Henderson, ex-Iowa; Dell Mims, SECC; Steven Clayton, ex-DMACC; Rodney Jackson, Mt. Mercy; Ray Vasser, ex-Kirkwood; Van Williams, ex-Kirkwood; Butch Wright, ex-Chicago DuSavile H.S.; Clark Anderson, ex-Linn-Mar.
Initial Thoughts: It is pretty rare when an incoming freshman goes in the first round, but for two years in a row, an incoming Hawkeye did just that. Cole is a beast in the post that Iowa fans are going to enjoy watching this summer. It will be interesting to see how Cole and Seth Gorney do together on the floor. It could be a nice (and big) inside-out combination.
ASOYIA/HODGE CONSTRUCTION
Jordan Eglseder, Northern Iowa; Jeff Peterson, Iowa; Adam Koch, Northern Iowa; Jared Josten, Northern Iowa; Kyle Schlaack, ex-Winona St.; Dan Bohall, Iowa; John Lickliter, Franklin Central High; Jeff Horner, ex-Iowa; Jordan Stoermer, Iowa City West; Brad Axdahl, ex-Coe.
Initial Thoughts: If Jordan Eglseder is healthy, which I think he is, then he is a tough match-up for anyone in this league. Iowa fans will get their first look at two players of interest in Jeff Peterson and John Lickliter. Peterson will get the bulk of the minutes at the point when Jeff Horner is not in town. Coach Lickliter's son is known as a very good shooter, so keep an eye on him. Even though he will probably not play many games, Jeff Horner will be the best player on the floor in this league.
JILL ARMSTRONG
Aliou Keita, ex-Drake; Cyrus Tate, Iowa; John Little, ex-Northern Iowa; Matt Burks, ex-IUPUI; Andrew Naeve, ex-Cornell U.; Roberto Mafra, SECC; Drew Lundberg, Northern Iowa; Jon Montgomery, Northern Iowa; Chris Aasland, ex-Mankato St.; Nick Larson, ex-Upper Iowa; Jacey Heuer, Wartburg.
Initial Thoughts: Not much of a Hawkeye flavor on this team, with Cyrus Tate being the only present or future Iowa player. The duo of Keita and Tate will give this squad a lot of power down low. Little is a nice guard to run the show and Burks can really shoot the basketball.
BEISSER LUMBER
David Palmer, Iowa; Brooks McKowen, ex-Northern Iowa; Dain Swetalla, Augustana (Ill.); Jason Price, ex-Iowa; Adam Viet, Northern Iowa; Kerwin Dunham, Northern Iowa; Don Stokes, ex-Chicago DuSavile High; Kevin Andrews, SW Minnesota St.; Marques Brathwaite, ex-Mt Mercy; Josh Oglesby, C.R. Washington.
Initial Thoughts: Iowa fans got a look at David Palmer last year and will get another one this summer before he officially sees action this winter. The combination of Palmer and McKowen could present problems for their opponents this summer. Nice to see former Hawkeye Jason Price back again this summer.
DAN WIESE MARKETING RESEARCH/L.L. PELLING
Kurt Looby, Iowa; Justin Johnson, Iowa; Marcus Leloux, ex-Northwestern College; Kwadzo Ahelegbe, Northern Iowa; Carlton Reed, Northern Iowa; Nathan Vanhofwegen, ex-Hope; Tony Wilcox, ex-European Pro; Joe Green, Northern Iowa; Reed McManigal, ex-Mason City; Brett Putz, ex-Forest City; Scott Sturm,
ex-Clinton C.C.
Initial Thoughts: This could be an interesting team to watch this summer. We get a look at how far Kurt Looby has come as an offensive threat. He is certainly one of the better defensive post players in the league as far as a shot blocker. With Justin Johnson and former Iowa player Carlton Reed, they have two guys who can shoot it from three point range.
PRIME INVESTMENTS/LUCKY PAWZ
Grant Stout, ex-Northern Iowa; Darryl Moore, ex-Iowa; Travis Brown, Northern Iowa; Brad Joens, ex-Wayne St.; Brent Barz, Northern Iowa; Luis Garcia, SECC; Tyson Colvin, ex-Upper Iowa; Ali Farokhmanesh, Kirkwood; Robbie Lehman, Simpson; Matt Morrison, Solon.
Initial Thoughts: This is the only team in the league without a current Iowa player on the roster, but they should be a fun team to watch. Anytime you put the high flying Darryl Moore on the court, it is a highlight waiting to happen. If Grant Stout is around all summer, this team could contend.
