Williamsburg tight end Ben Subbert has decided to turn down multiple scholarship offers to pursue his dream of playing for the Iowa Hawkeyes. Today, the 6-foot-4, 235-pound Subbert announced that he has accepted a preferred walk-on opportunity from the Iowa coaching staff.

Q: Why did you pick Iowa?

SUBBERT: I picked Iowa because that’s where I’ve wanted to play since I was a kid. It was really hard not picking the school of my dreams to play on the team I’ve always loved. Also, I want to major in business and Tippie is pretty solid. The people in the program are people I want to be around.

Q: What other colleges were seriously considered?

SUBBERT: NDSU, UNI, and South Dakota.

Q: Did your brother being there play a factor?

SUBBERT: Not really. No doubt it will be cool being on the same team together, but it didn’t change anything really in my decision process.

Q: Was it a walk-on offer that you accepted?

SUBBERT: It was a preferred walk on, yeah.

Q: How important were the coaches in your decision?

SUBBERT: Very. Other than the players, they’re going to be the people who you spend the most amount of time with. That was very important.

Q: Was it hard turning down scholarship offers?

SUBBERT: Yeah, it definitely was.

Q: Where do they see you playing and what have they said about you fitting into their scheme?

SUBBERT: On the offensive side on the ball as a tight end, and also as a move guy.

Q: Do you have a preference of offense or defense?

SUBBERT: Offense, but I don’t really mind. Football is football.

Q: What was the hardest part of recruiting?

SUBBERT: Choosing to either go to Iowa or take the money.

During the recruiting process, Subbert picked up scholarship offers from Northern Illinois, North Dakota State, UNI, South Dakota, South Dakota State, Western Illinois, and Illinois State.

As a senior, Subbert produced on both sides of the ball with 19 catches for 412 yards and 3 touchdowns on offense and 71 tackles, 30 TFL, and 18 sacks on defense.
