Brent Metcalf finished last season with a 35-1 record and won both an individual and team national champoionship, but the 149 pounder is never one to be satisfied. Much like his coach Tom Brands, Metcalf seeks perfection. He talks about the Hawkeyes having a target on their back this year, how they can improve as a team, and much more.

Q: Everyone was impressed with how big and powerful this team became last year, but was this a perfect national championship? It seems like you are still building for this season even after winning a national title.
METCALF: Yeah, absolutely. I mean you can't really call it perfect until you get ten guys on top of the podium, you know. And really it's not perfect unless you have ten guys with pins all the way through the entire tournament. I mean that's how I would look at it. So, I mean, yes it's definitely building. We continue to build in lots of areas. I know we got the job done as a team, but I know there's a lot of individual goals, even myself. The way I performed, the way a lot of these guys performed was good enough for the win, but not quite up to par to our sort of standards.
Q: What has to happen this year? People kind of think about this program as just kind of running through things and dominating and owning the national tournament. It's always had those streaks of years. What's got to happen this year for that to happen?
METCALF: Continue to do what we're doing, but just at another level. Just, guys are on board and they've just got to continue to come on board, as in like, when you talk about dominating wise, you're not out there to win matches, but you're really dominating. You're really putting a lot of points on the board. Just changing that mentality. This year, the guys are starting to click and we've just got to go and do it. We've got to perform.
Q: Coach talked about that you guys are going to get a lot of peoples' best shot. You guys welcome that kind of challenge don't you?
METCALF: Absolutely. I mean, that's the way you want it, you know. Being the kind of competitors that we are, we kind of want a target on our back. That's the sort of person I am. I know there's a lot of guys on this team that are that way as well. We put ourselves in the position that we are in because we love it. We love the pressure, we love having the bull's eye, and we love going out and proving them wrong.
Q: It seems like you guys kind of love being hated again.
METCALF: A little bit. Yeah, I think you could say that. You know, it's a driving factor. It's something, you know, that's been a part of this program.
Q: Are there people that probably don't want to see Iowa ever back on top again?
METCALF: I think there's probably a lot of people. I can think of one not too far from here that probably wouldn't mind not having us being on top. But, that just goes along with the nature of the sport.
